Haunted Books’ new series begins with the original of Raymond Nickford’s “Aristo’s Family” and now includes the new paperback edition, together with “Mister Kreasey’s Demon”.
Nickford brings to this genre his characteristically poignant and very powerfully rendered underlying themes, not without conflict and the macabre but certainly without the tedium of excess bodies or the ‘shock and gore’ onslaught on literature.
The macabre is used, but where it serves to heighten the extremity to which the characters may be driven, while ‘gross out’ is regarded as a poor substitute for characters whose lives are memorable because here uniquely stressed and tested.
This is contemporary fiction - particularly eerie but more convincing because not reliant on Gothic props.
